Wines on Korčula island
“Wine is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy”
Korčula & wine - partners for an amazing life
Many records prove that the common grape vine is “the guardian of civilisation”. In the Middle Ages, viticulture was the main economic activity of the population of the island of Korčula. Autochthonous wines from Korčula have been famous for their quality throughout history, and they were even exported to Venice and Vienna. This type of climate has all five zones (the sum of hours of sunshine and temperature) required for the production of premium wines, which is really rare in the world. Pošip from Korčula is the first white wine which attained the “protected geographical origin” status, and it is famous all over the world. In vineyards of Čara and Smokvica, Pošip and Rukatac are the dominant protected wines. Lumbarajsko polje is located at the east side of the island. Autochthonous grapes Grk are grown on its sandy soil and are used to produce a premium dry wine of golden colour. This makes it extremely special, so you absolutely have to try it at least once in your life! The high-quality plavac Blato is an exceptional dry wine. It captures the spirit of the fishermen and farmers who had to clear dozens of square kilometres of land in order to find fertile patches on the island and who built stone walls around them. Even today, those walls dominate the landscape. You should also try premium wines from Pelješac, such as Dingač, Postup and Plavac, which are also an important feature of this area. It would be a shame to visit Korčula and not try these amazing wines.
